Bike racers put the rubber on the road Sunday at the Avondale Crit, the first race of Arizona’s road season.
It was a day for new riders new to gain experience and for all riders to take stock of their own fitness levels while checking out the competition.
Pro fields
Janelle Cole, who formerly raced for UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling, donned a Landis/Trek kit and emerged victorious in the Women’s Pro 1/2/3 field. Ben Kanute, a professional triathlete who competed in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, lapped the field and took the win for the Men’s Pro 1/2/3.
Cat 5 fields
Cecile Lejeune (ASU Cycling) rode away from the field toward the end of the race to nab the top spot on the podium. In a nearly 40-person Men’s Cat 5 field, Cal Skilsky (unattached) used some beginner skills to win his first race of the year.
