The University of New Mexico came away with a team overall regional championship Sunday at the Southwest Collegiate Conference Mountain Bike regionals.
The Lobos climbed past University of Arizona with a 28-point lead, with Northern Arizona University in third. Arizona State University landed just off the podium in fourth, while New Mexico State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University tied for sixth.
Prescott College, the only varsity level team, won a championship in that division, and placed fifth among the rest of the schools, which are non-varsity. USA Cycling recently changed the structure of collegiate racing, separating out schools varsity/non-varsity and by division in each category.
“Our mountain bike season was incredibly exciting with close racing all season long,” said conference director Joey Iuliano. “We also saw the reappearance of New Mexico State and Embry-Riddle, which is exciting growth for the conference.”
