Gallery + Results: Arizona riders assess early-season fitness at Avondale 1

Arizona riders tested their legs at the first crit of the season Sunday in Avondale, just west of Phoenix.

Sally Aston (Trek West Phoenix Women’s Racing) made a victorious comeback after a two-year hiatus from the road. She grabbed two wins on the day in back-to-back races: the Women’s Masters 35+ and Pro Women’s 1/2/3.

Ethan Overson (Gateway/Trek) went into a two-man break with Max Cronyn (El Grupo Youth Cycling) in the Men’s 1/2/3 field and sailed across the line for the win.

The Avondale Crit offered equal payout for pro men and women for the first time in the race’s history.

The Women’s Cat 4/5 and Masters 35+ attracted 21 riders. Kelly Bigliazzi crossed the line first in the Cat 5 women’s race. At the time of publication, the Men’s Cat 5 race results had not yet been posted.
