Tour de Murrieta begins with action-packed crit

MURRIETA, Calif. – Pro fields pulled no punches Saturday at the Tour de Murrieta, where both races included plenty of action and suspenseful final laps.

A four-man break in the Men’s Pro 1/2 field looked like it could stick, but as the laps dwindled, last-minute attacks brought back three riders, leaving Legion of Los Angeles’ Sean McElroy making it to the line solo with the peloton just behind.

And for the bunch sprint win? McElroy’s teammate Cory Williams, followed by Justin Williams. Legion of Los Angeles will go into Sunday’s circuit race defending the top three spots in the omnium.

In the Women’s Pro 1/2/3 race, attacks started in the first lap, and soon Holly Breck (Go Fast-Incycle) found herself off the front for more than half the race. It wasn’t until Colombian Jessica Parra bridged that Breck got some company.

But on the final lap, Parra and Breck raced to the line into a headwind down the finishing straight and Parra emerged the victor. Shelby Reynolds (Monster Media Elite Women) took the bunch sprint.
