South Mountain Circuit Race results posted

It was a beautiful but warm day for the South Mountain Circuit Race on Saturday, a loop of more than a mile with climbing and twisting turns to make things interesting.

Thomas Keating (Team Winded), rode away from the men’s Cat 3 field in a solo effort that put him first across the line by a margin of at least a minute. He attributed his win to time off the bike during his spring break in San Francisco.

“I only did two three-hour rides that were mostly just exploring the city,” Keating said. “The rest week had me feeling really fresh for this weekend, but most importantly for the San Dimas Stage Race next weekend.”

Keating said he liked the South Mountain Circuit Race’s course because “unlike most courses we race there is nowhere to hide, so a well-timed counter attack was very effective. I also like the technical descent because of my bike handling skills.”

Keating said he struggled with the heat; temperataures rose into the 80s on Saturday.

“I knew the race would be hard because of the elevation gain, but the heat made it even harder, and I wish I would have had a second bottle,” Keating said.
