Riders took on a short 3.2-mile prologue at the first stage of Tucson Bicycle Classic, where Silber Pro Cycling and Visit Dallas DNA Pro Cycling established early leads in the pro fields.
Alexander Cataford (Silber Pro Cycling) continued his team’s winning streak for Arizona stage races this season with a two-second lead and time of 7:34, followed by three Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis riders, who weren’t far behind – at most a four-second gap. Cataford’s teammate, Ryan Roth, won Valley of the Sun last month.
Tucson snowbird Joshua Berry (Jelly Belly) did not start after getting hit by a car while riding in Tucson on his TT bike. He is suffering from a concussion and neck injury.
Phoenix’s Anna Sanders (Visit Dallas DNA Pro Cycling) took the top spot for the women with a seven-second lead and time of 8:32, leading Scotti Lechuga (Hagens Berman | Supermint), out of Arkansas, Sanders’ home state.
The two teams followed up with Lindsay Bayer (Hagens Berman) in fourth and Mia Manganello (Visit Dallas) in sixth, setting up for a two-team duel over the next two days, with the exception of Tucson’s Kim Lucie (Canyon Elite) in third.
