An unusually rainy day in Tucson on Sunday meant fewer, but drenched, riders at the UA Grand Prix Crit on the University of Arizona campus.
Water pooled at one end of the course around a sweeping bend just before the finishing straight. Riders took extra caution there and around a hairpin turn on the opposite end of the course.
Amy Chandos (DEAN Factory Racing) broke away from the field, lapped it and took the top step of the podium. Ava Hachmann (Fort Lewis College) came in second, followed by Chloe Welch (UA Cycling).
Ethan Overson (El Grupo Youth Cycling) broke away with Matthew Riccitello (LUX/Specialized by Cynergy) for much of the race. The two stayed together until the final sprint when Overson took it to the line for victory. Riccitello finished second, and his teammate, Quinn Simmons, who won the Vuelta a Santa Catalina Road Race on Saturday, took third.
Cat 5
Another Ethan from El Grupo Youth Cycling – Ethan Sotelo – emerged victorious in the Men’s Cat 4/5 race while Sophia Larsen (unattached) took the victory in the Women’s 4/5 race.
