South Mountain’s Summit Road is scheduled to reopen Saturday at 5 a.m.
The road has been closed since sustaining damage during an Aug. 31 monsoon.
“Last summer’s rainfall caused problems in communities Valley-wide, but was particularly destructive in the South Mountain and Laveen areas,” said Councilwoman Kate Gallego, whose district was among the hardest hit. ”
The largest municipal park in the nation, South Mountain is home to 51 miles of mountain biking trails and a summit road climb all within a short drive from the Phoenix metro area.
In recent months, crews repaired damage to the surface and understructure of the mountain roadway as well as erosion along the shoulder in various areas, according to Phoenix press release.
The work also addressed concerns with preventative drainage in locations where the 80-plus year old original structures had become insufficient to handle stormwater runoff, officials said.
Portions of the construction are in progress and could prompt intermittent closures.
