New Arizona time trial series begins Sunday

Arizona riders will begin competing on Sunday for a championship in a new 10-race time trial series.

Time-trial race promoters banded together to create the Arizona Time Trial Series, spanning nine months and culminating with the state championship.

“We have been thinking about creating this series for awhile, and feel that those racers who just want to go as fast as they can over a measured distance should have a series and recognition of their own,” said Don Melhado, a USA Cycling race official in Arizona and time trial promoter. “We hope the series provides that venue. Time trialing is the best way to enter the wonderful world of bicycle racing.”

Melhado said the series will provide “speed specialists on two wheels” with the opportunity to compete regularly for an overall goal while measuring their improving performance.

Points will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category, and to be eligible for the overall championship, a rider must accrue at least 10 points in the category. The winner in each category receives a series championship jersey.
