Local bike shops, cyclists aid in happy holiday for family battling cancer

A cycling community came together Tuesday to help a family whose 2-year-old is in the hospital battling cancer.

The family of eight received a bike for each child just before Christmas thanks to a collaborative effort of Children’s Cancer Network, Rob Nickerson (Team Vitesse), Strada Racing Club, Clipped InTrips for Kids and local bike shops Absolute BikesGlobal BikesLandis Cyclery, the Pedal Bike ShopState Bicycle Co.

Nickerson, who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer, saw a Clipped In post on Facebook about donating, and he immediately responded to donate a bike. Nickerson also donated an extra $200 gift card to the family for Christmas dinner.

“This is amazing,” said Sonja Hurte, the mother of the kids. “I have very athletic kids so this is great. It was heart warming.”
