Wrap-up: Arizona riders atop podium after Day 2 and 3 of Masters Track Nationals

Arizona’s contingent of track cyclists at USA Cycling Masters Track Nationals are making themselves at home on the podium after Day 2 and 3 at the Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill, S.C.

Karl Baumgart (GPE Racing p/b Athlete Octane) took silver in the individual pursuit of 3,000 meters with a time of 3:38.351, a personal record, the third fastest time ever set at the venue and faster than all times from last year’s masters championships.

The winner, Dean Phillips (Team Fit Werx) of Wenham, Mass. and a defending national champion, clocked 3:34.159 for gold.

Baumgart said it is what he trained for as his “A-race” all year.

“I’m excited, and it’s surreal, but at the same time I have really been looking for a national title,” he said. “But you never know who shows up, and [Phillips] is simply amazing – defending national pursuit champ, defending national TT masters champ; I can hold my head high. So I’m thrilled to keep getting on the podium, and it is a dream run.”

Baumgart currently is leading the standings for the Best All-Around Rider competition.

Other Arizona top 10 finishes from Wednesday and Thursday so far included:

  • Wayne Lewis: third in match sprint (photo above)
