The film’s stars Dennis Quaid, Dennis Christopher and Jackie Earle Haley received the commemorative jerseys last week at the Interbike Awards Gala in Las Vegas.
“The Breaking Away Reunion at the IB Awards was definitely the highlight of the evening,” said Interbike vice president Pat Hus.
The jerseys, which match those worn by the film’s stars, are now being produced as a limited edition item, and $15 from each jersey will be donated to World Bicycle Relief, a non-profit organization that builds and delivers bicycles to underserved communities in Africa.
“We are committed in supporting their efforts and are honored that we have found a way to collaborate and give back to communities in need,” said Scott Kaylin, co-founder of Champion System.
For every 10 jerseys sold, Champion System will be able to fund one bicycle for the organization. For every 16 jerseys sold, the organization will be able to train a mechanic to help ensure that bicycles can be maintained and repaired in the local community.
Reaching 1,000 jerseys can impact an entire community, according to Champion System, and would provide 100 bikes to students through the organization’s Bicycles for Educational Empowerment Program.
Two lucky bidders will walk away with exclusive jerseys signed by the film’s stars.
“Breaking Away united the cycling world and to now have a special piece of its history benefit our work is truly humbling,” said World Bicycle Relief development director Katie Bolling.
