Riders entered a colossal pain cave Sunday with fast and furious nine-mile loops near Colossal Cave Mountain Park in Vail, just south of Tucson.
As part of the Southern Arizona omnium, some riders were fresh off a time trial the day before and ready to rack up points for overall podium wins, while collegiate riders duked it out for their third official race weekend (more on that tomorrow from the SWCCC reporter, Cherry Niel).
Former pro cyclist Tommy Danielson spectated the Women’s 3/4 race; rumor has it he is dating Kourtney Compton, who placed second behind Aileen El-Kadi from New Mexico. Danielson lives in Tucson during the winter and spring.
Marcel Berger (Zia Velo Cycling), from New Mexico, took the win for the Pro/1/2 Men’s field after a suffering a disappointing Valley of the Sun stage race where he flatted in the road race and got caught up in the Cat 2 crit pileup crash. Berger also won the omnium. Pros Michael Le Rossignol (Silber Pro Cycling) and Travis McCabe (Holowesko-Citadel) finished ninth and 12th respectively.
Sally Aston (The Velo), a last-minute sign up, rode away from the field and crossed the line solo to easily top the podium for the Women’s Pro/1/2/3 field. Irena Ossola (unattached) brought home the omnium win.
