Strada Racing’s juniors created some nail-biting action Tuesday at USA Cycling Juniors and Elite Track Nationals in Carson, Calif.
Sam Reiss, Armon Haghighat, Kayla Hankins and Brady McCaskill all posted times to beat and ultimately placed in the top 10 in the 500-meter time trial finals.
Reiss, who started racing less than a year ago, held the top time of 38.503 for his 13-14 age group by about two seconds until the final two heats. It wasn’t until Peter Moore, the final competitor, defeated him with a time of 37.625. Reiss finished third in the omnium.
McCaskill finished third in the time trial and fourth in the omnium. Haghihat took fifth and Hankins took sixth in their final races. Hankins, a defending national champion for the 11-12 age group, entered 13-14 this year and managed to beat her time last year by one second. She fought back to the bike after a crash that left her jaw broken in three places.
